Outdoor weddings feel romantic and photogenic almost by default. Natural light, greenery, maybe a lake or mountain view — you don’t have to work hard to make it beautiful. The catch? You’re at the mercy of the weather, and depending on the season, that could mean rain, wind, heat, mud, or bugs crashing your big day.

Indoor weddings give you control. Climate control, predictable acoustics, no surprise rainstorms, and no worrying about your centerpieces blowing over. The tradeoff is that indoor spaces can sometimes feel less “wow” on their own, so you may need to lean more on decor and lighting to create that special atmosphere.

Neither option is “better” — it really depends on what matters most to you.

The Biggest Factor: Weather Risk vs. Peace of Mind

Here’s the honest truth: almost every other consideration (style, photos, vibe) can be solved creatively. The one thing you can’t control is the weather. So the real question to ask yourself is: how much anxiety am I willing to carry leading up to my wedding day?

Check the guest experience.

Will your guests roll with the flow if you give them paper fans for heat or umbrellas for rain (and are you willing to have those items on standby)?  Are you okay if guests wear boots and sneakers because it’s muddy?

Think about timeline flexibility

Some venues only offer certain windows for ceremony vs. reception setup — make sure it fits your day and how much time you want for photos, ceremony, and reception.

Tour at the same time of day and season as your wedding.

Lighting and temperature can be totally different at 5 PM vs. noon; landscaping and lighting are also different month to month.

I’ll never forget planning my February wedding and visiting a venue in Ballard the year before – and finding out that it smelled like seaweed and mildew at that time of year.  Thank goodness I didn’t check it out in dry season and think it would be the same in February!

Think about your food and drinks. 

Some outdoor venues limit what you can consume, or what kind of catering you can have.  For example, liquor/spirits may not be allowed, or that food truck you really wanted to pull up during the Cupid Shuffle may be off-limits.

Also, caterers often charge more for outdoor weddings, if they have to bring cooking and refrigeration equipment, tables, chairs, and the like.  Get your catering quote before you book the venue (and compare it to an indoor venue and catering quote).

Make sure what you’re picturing is doable before you put down a deposit, and that you’ve added the venue AND catering costs together before you compare.

Get backup costs in writing.

Tent rentals, heaters, and rain contingencies can quietly blow up your budget if you don’t ask upfront.  Plan for the worst, hope for the best, and don’t go off on your honeymoon with a sour taste in your mouth from a surprise bill.
