Truly Unique Party Experiences

Things to Do That Defy the Norm

Whether it’s a birthday, wedding, gala, shower, or milestone celebration, sometimes you want to make people’s jaws drop.  Everyone suggests a photo booth.  But what if you want more?  If you’re the person who wants your party to be remembered forever, we’ve got some truly inspired ideas for you.

Beyond the Basics: Immersive and Unexpected Experiences

  • Interactive Storytelling: Hire a professional storyteller to weave tales about the honoree or couple.  Or, create an interactive narrative where guests contribute to the story’s progression.
  • Escape Room Challenge (or “walk up and play puzzles”): Set up a mini escape room experience for guests to enjoy during downtime. This encourages teamwork and provides a fun, engaging activity.  Some companies can bring the supplies to you, like this one.
  • Stargazing: If you have an outdoor evening event, consider having a telescope and a knowledgeable astronomer on hand to guide guests through the night sky.
  • Silent Disco: Guests wear wireless headphones and choose between different music channels.  This creates a fun, energetic, and visually interesting dance floor.
  • Acrobats or Aerialists: For a truly theatrical touch, hire acrobats or aerialists to perform during cocktail hour as a featured performance. This adds a “wow” factor and creates a memorable spectacle.  In Seattle, our favorite performers are from Maison de V.

Creative and Personalized Activities

  • Perfume Bar: Guests can create their own custom scents by blending essential oils, creating a unique and personalized favor.
  • Scavenger Hunt: Use an app like Actionbound to create a step-by-step scavenger hunt that provides clues and opportunities for guests to upload photos that you can keep forever.  This is a creative way to also provide facts about the honoree.  It can be a great activity for guests who don’t want to dance, or those who need something to do to feel comfortable when in a social setting.
  • Live Calligraphy Station: A calligrapher can create personalized keepsakes, such as bookmarks or place cards, for guests to take home.
  • Digital Guest Book with Time Capsule: Guests leave video messages and digital photos, compiled into a digital time capsule to be opened on a future anniversary.
  • Mad Libs: Create customized Mad Libs that are party-themed and have guests fill them out. These are very fun to read later.  My favorite way to do this is to hang up a giant piece of butcher paper and write the words and  _______s on it ahead of time.
  • Seed Planting Station: Have a station where guests can plant seeds in small pots, symbolizing the growth of the honored person or couple.
  • Flower-Building Station: Provide fresh flowers and supplies for guests to build flower crowns, boutonneirres, bouquets, or wreaths with the guidance of a florist

Adding a Touch of Whimsy and Surprise

  • Flash Mob: Organize a surprise flash mob with your wedding party or even some guests.  WikiHow has a great step-by-step guide for DIY, or you can hire companies to invade your event with a dance.
  • Puppet Show: A whimsical and unexpected form of entertainment that can be tailored to a person or couple’s personalities and story.  It sounds silly, but it can be a lot of fun that has your guests rolling on the floor laughing.
  • Confetti Cannons or Smoke Machines: These can add a dramatic effect to key moments, such as the first dance or a grand exit.
  • Drone Light Show: An amazing option for an evening outdoor party or wedding that will create a beautiful and unique light show in the sky.  You’d be surprised how many companies do this.
  • Interactive Food Stations: Think taco bars or build-your-own pizzas, dessert stations, or even a DIY cocktail bar. These encourage guests to mingle and create their own experience.

How to Choose?

  • Consider your guests: Think about the age range and interests of your guests when choosing entertainment.  Yes, it’s your party, but you don’t want to be disappointed by a lack of participation.
  • Venue limitations: Make sure your chosen activities are suitable for your venue.
  • Budget: Entertainment can range from simple to elaborate, so set a budget and stick to it.  A lot of ideas can be DIY, but even those have a cost for supplies
  • Time: Unless you’re hiring someone to take care of the details from start to finish, you need to be realistic about how much time you have to create the experience.  Something like making your own mini scape room could take a lot of research and a lot of crafting time.  Organizing a flash mob might take time to choreograph.  Plus, you will need to set up rehearsals or recordings that you send to friends via YouTube to practice.  And if you’re hosting the party or the entertainment, remember to budget time for the setup and the cleanup!
